With the threat of piracy spreading from the Gulf of Aden to waters closer to the Indian coast, the Navy has advised country craft to avoid operating along the east coast of Africa and Somalia.
This month, Somali pirates hijacked as many as eight country craft piloted by crew from Saurashtra-Kutch in Gujarat. Seven of these vessels have been released by the pirates after they ran out of fuel and ration, while one remains in the clutches of pirates. he Navy said in a press release that continuous patrols by the multinational navies have brought down the number of piracy attempts in the Gulf of Aden.
On an average 16 — 18 warships are deployed in the Gulf of Aden and most of the merchant vessels are escorted. Only a limited number of vessels operate off the east coast of Africa or Somalia.
But now the menace of piracy is spreading into the high seas. Though periodic incidents of hijacking of dhows have been reported earlier, in the past few days, there has been a spurt in the hijackings of Indian dhows off Somalia.
